Stop Polluting Kiuu River: Our Water, Our Health, Our Future!
We, the residents, youth, farmers, and environmental advocates of Kiambu County, are calling for urgent and immediate action to stop the ongoing pollution of Kiuu River, a key tributary of the Nairobi River.
Kiuu River is currently heavily contaminated by untreated sewage, industrial discharge, and solid waste dumping. This pollution has turned parts of the river into open sewer channels, menace to public health, food safety, loss biodiversity, and livelihoods.
We call upon all the primary decision makers and key responsible stakeholders to:
- Identify and hold accountable businesses, institutions, and individuals releasing untreated sewage into the river system.
- Enforce existing environmental and water protection laws to stop illegal discharge of sewage and solid waste into Kiuu River.
- Protect and restore riparian land by halting encroachment and stopping illegal construction along the riverbanks.
- Invest in proper sewerage and waste management systems in areas surrounding Kiuu River to prevent direct discharge into waterways.
- Support community-led river restoration initiatives, including tree and bamboo planting along riverbanks to stabilize soil, filter pollutants, and revive biodiversity.
- Conduct regular water quality testing and make the results publicly accessible to ensure transparency and accountability.
Clean rivers are not a luxury; they are a basic right and a foundation for healthy communities, sustainable agriculture, and resilient ecosystems.
Why is this important?
Kiuu River supports thousands of people directly and indirectly. Its water is used for urban farming, small-scale agriculture, and domestic use.
Today, however, polluted water is being used to grow food that ends up in our local markets, exposing families to serious health risks from toxins and pathogens.

Children play near this river. Farmers depend on it. Wildlife and plants rely on it. When the river is polluted, our food, our health, and our environment suffer.
This is not just about one river.
Because Kiuu River flows into the Nairobi River, its pollution spreads downstream, affecting even more communities and ecosystems. Protecting Kiuu means protecting life on land and life in water, as well as advancing the right to clean water and a healthy environment.

We, the community stand together and say:
Our rivers are our life. Our health is not disposable. Our future is not a dumping site.
